INCI name: Polyquaterium-7

Libraquat PQ7 by Libra Speciality Chemicals, is a Polycationic copolymer of acrylamide and diallyldimethylammonium chloride. Polyquaterium is the International Nomenclature for Cosmetic Ingredients designation for several polycationic polymers that are used in the personal care industry.

What is Libraquat?

Libraquat is a cationic water soluble copolymer with excellent cleaning abilities within personal and, specifically, hair care.

The copolymer is the result of the polymerisation of the diallydimethylammonium chloride (DADMAC) and acrylamide (AAM) to produce polyquaternium-7 (PQ7). The use of these highly stable monomers gives a stable copolymer with a wide range of abilities. The structure of the repeating units, as shown below, and the distribution of these units throughout the copolymer are carefully controlled by the process used here at Libra.

Once made on site the copolymer is carefully analysed by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) here at Libra to ensure the highest quality of customer product. Below is a scheme showing a proposed mechanism used to produce PQ7, through careful control of the reagents and the conditions, e.g. temperature and catalysts levels used, the copolymer can be made with exact specifications

How does Libraquat work?

Due to the naturally anionic characteristics of hair the positive charges within PQ7 associate with this negative charge associate to the hair strands the result is smooth hair with a glossy finish by drying as a thin film over the hair strands. This thin invisible film allows hair to hold its shape for longer.
